Making money out of hobbies

by Penny on August 10, 2008

Not many people are lucky in the sense of being able to work at a job that they’re truly passionate about. Just ask about, and see how many of your friends admit to holding down dream jobs. However, many people are beginning to find that they are able to make some money out of their interests. I am one of them – by writing. Although not a big-timer, my blogs generate some income for me. Of course it’s not big money, but it’s steady enough to pay some credit card bills here and there.

I started writing blogs out of passion, and soon realised that many people monetize their blogs and make handsome money out of them. So since I’m at it, I thought I’d just try my luck too and am happy so far.

Another of my new found hobby of late is photography. I don’t own a high-end digital SLR, just a semi-SLR by Nikon. I find it to be a better camera than a point and shoot and have just started experimenting with it. I don’t take great pictures so far, but over time, I hope to improve on this skill.

I just read an article that gave me a good idea not to mention the inspiration to read up, practise and improve on my photography skill. I can actually sell my pictures to some photo stock websites. Although each image bought will not earn me a lot of commission, I would be quite happy to know that my work is appreciated and wanted by others!

Now I have 2 passions that can potentially earn me some shopping money. How glad am I? Very! How about you, have you explored your passions to see if they too can rake in some income for you? It is not the amount that matters, but the thrill of doing something you enjoy and getting paid for it!
