Precious metals

How precious are precious metals? I’ve been seeing a lot of new funds buying into precious metals lately. Maybe commodities is the way to go now versus the more volatile stock market?
I don’t know how the commodity markets work but all I know is that a small time investor like me would never be able to buy into them. The only possible way is through unit trusts that buy commodities.
Any advise, anybody?
