Statistics on Malaysians’ habit to spend versus save

by Penny on January 1, 2009

I was reading January 2009’s issue of Personal Money magazine and came across some statistics on the preference to spend today versus saving for tomorrow. This statistics came about from Aviva’s 2008 Consumer Attitudes to Savings study. Here are some of the results shown for a few countries, Malaysia included.

Before you look at the results, take a guess what Malaysians think about spending today versus saving for tomorrow.

spend or save

Did the result above match your expectations of what the average Malaysian’s habit is with regards to spending versus saving? I’m not sure exactly when this survey was done. If it was done in the later part of the year when the global crisis has hit, the results could be very different from the above tabulation.

Anyway, it’s always a good habit to save even when times are good. You just never know when the rain will hit us.

Happy 2009 to everyone and may you have a prosperous year in every way!
